Item Open Access The Role of Mentoring in Adolescents’ Spiritual Formation(2015) Chiroma, Nathan H.An integrative approach that emphasises the fundamental role of mentoring is essential in adolescents’ spiritual formation. Leading adolescents into spiritual formation necessitates walking alongside them through mentoring rather than simply teaching them to cope with pressures. There is a tremendous hunger among the adolescents of today for spiritual guides and mentors that will come alongside them in their journey of spiritual formation. Much has been written about mentoring; however, this article focuses on the use of mentoring in fostering adolescents’ spiritual formation, drawing on recent research. This article shows how youth workers can and should embrace mentoring in order to facilitate adolescents’ spiritual formation.Item Open Access The Menace of Boko Haram and the Violation of Young People’s Dignity in Northern Nigeria(The South African Baptist Journal of Theology, 2017-10-24) Chiroma, Nathan H.or direct violation, the notion of human dignity is too often seriously obstructed and even disfigured. Hence, human dignity has proven to be a vague term in the liberal rights discourse due to its broad range. This article endeavours to provide a Christian definition of human dignity as it relates to young people in Northern Nigeria. Firstly, it will seek to address an understanding of human dignity as it ought to be considered in the public and the theological domain. Secondly, the article will consider the violation of young people’s dignity by Boko Haram’s violence in Northern Nigeria, and lastly, this article will suggest ways that the church, youth workers and communities can contribute to helping restore the dignity of young people, especially those affected by the Boko Haram menace.Item Open Access Providing mentoring for orphans and vulnerable children in internally displaced person camps: The case of northern Nigeria(Theological Studies, 2016-10-31) Chiroma, Nathan H.Item Open Access Exploring the nexus between children and youth ministry(Verbum et Ecclesia, 2019-11-26) Chiroma, Nathan H.The aim of this article is to gain a proper understanding and relationship between children and youth ministry. The article sought the understanding of the relationship between children and youth ministry among children and youth workers in some denominations in Nigeria. The study employed a qualitative approach through focus group interviews. A total number of 70 respondents participated in the study: 35 children workers and 35 youth workers. Data for the research were analysed by means of thematic analysis. The empirical research findings indicate among other that many children and youth workers see their ministry as completely detached from each other. The study further reveals that there is a disparity in the understanding of both children and youth ministry among the respondents. Several conclusions were drawn from the study, firstly, children and youth ministries are an integral part of church ministry. Secondly, there has to be meaningful engagements and conservations between children and youth workers for the purposes of intergenerational ministry. Thirdly, children and youth workers must be intentional to reduce the dichotomy that exists between the two ministries. Given the research findings, the article suggests ways in which children and youth workers can work together to enhance the faith formation of children and youth. In conclusion, practical ways are proposed for enhancing the relationship between children and youth workers. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The intra- or interdisciplinary implications of this article are found in the call to have a conversation between children (child theology) and youth workers (youth ministry) in the quest to minister to both. It is also implied that children and youth workers come from different fields of study, mainly social work, psychology and theology.Item Open Access The church in Nigeria and political economy of youth unemployment: A pragmatic approach(HTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies, 2020-08-13) Ononogbu, Olihe A.; Chiroma, N.H.; Nche, G. C.; Ononogbu, D. C.Nigeria has over 57% of its population as youths. The nation is rich in human and mineral resources, yet the level of youth unemployment continues to rise and to pose serious socioeconomic and political threats. The aim of this study was to highlight the strong link between the high level of youth unemployment and the rising tide of violence and criminalization of the public space in Nigeria. In other words, we argued that the youth routinely took out their frustrations in violent and criminal forms. The study was set in Aba, city of Abia state, which is arguably the largest commercial town in the south-east region of Nigeria. It is also synonymous with violent and criminal social breakdowns. This empirical study adopted a multi-phase sampling technique for the data collection procedure, including the distribution of questionnaires, extensive library research and personal observation. By implication, both primary and secondary sources were used. The results show that youth unemployment was on the increase and government efforts alone were inadequate to solve the problem. In conclusion, the all-hands-on-deck approach was advocated. This entailed that the visibility of the church at almost every level of community life, especially at the grass-root level must be used as a vital platform to reach the people. Thus, it was recommended that the church should actively tap into the multifarious professional capacities of her members and use them as resource persons to creatively tackle the problem of youth unemployment.Item Open Access Interdisplinary Reflections on Interplay Between Religion, film and Youth(SunPress, 2019-07-01) Chiroma, Nathan H.Item Open Access Tapping into the Unexplored power and potential of the youth in the fight against corruption(Ajawi Crowther University Press, 2018-01-01) Chiroma, Nathan H.Item Open Access “Lived religion” in youth ministry: a pragmatic reflection from Nigeria(African Theological Journal for Church and Society, 2021-06-01) Ogidi, J. D.; Chiroma, Nathan H.Lived religion is a reflection on the influence of religion on how people live their daily lives in the community, school, society, and other religious and social institutions. This paper investigates the practice of lived religion within the Nigeria youth ministry. Praxis entails what people do daily, oriented and guided by action, and not just theoretical knowledge or the dogma of a religious tradition or rituals. In investigating the youth ministry praxis in Africa (with a focus on the Nigerian context), this paper engages with Gregg and Scholefield, and Osmer’s pragmatic theological task, because the framework is action guided, thus investigates what youth ministry is actually doing among African youth.
