Mixed methods research (MMR) is a methodology that incorporates multiple methods to address research questions in an appropriate and principled manner. The study population was 63 local roads construction companies in Nairobi County, Kenya, where the road construction project managers were the unit of observation. A census of all the 63 road construction project managers was conducted since the target population was small. Questionnaires having both close ended and open-ended questions were hand delivered to the sampled respondents. The quantitative research data was analysed using SPPS V20.0 software, while the qualitative data was analysed using content analysis technique via the Nvivo software. Correlation results indicated that Focus-oriented leadership has positive, moderate and significant association with competitiveness of local roads construction companies, Persistent-oriented leadership has a positive, weak but significant association with competitiveness of local roads construction companies, Collaborative-oriented leadership and innovative-oriented leadership have positive, strong and significant association with competitiveness of local roads construction companies. The study recommends making road construction company vision a leading parameter in enhancing competitiveness. In addition, the study recommends road construction companies management to develop adaptive strategy that instil persistence skills. Further, the study recommends partnership in tendering with other road construction companies, a factor that gives competitive advantage. Finally, the study recommends that local road construction companies align project policies and objectives towards innovations. This study will benefit policy makers in the field of road construction in coming up with relevant policies that support competitiveness of local road construction companies. Again, the study will benefit local road construction companies in facilitating their understanding on how engaging principles of visionary leadership will enable them build capacity technically, financially and in machinery to enable them compete at global platform. Moreover, the study proposes practices that are beneficial to the top echelons of management of local road construction companies in instilling visionary leadership tenets to make them competitive. The study findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge by filling an existing research gap and form a foundation for future research work.
