| dc.description.abstract | Adoption is a major theme in the Bible, especially in the writings of Apostle Paul. The Greek word υἱοθεσία (huiothesia) is translated as “adoption as sons,” in the Biblereferring to divine adoption as sons (of God). The usage of huiothesia is metaphorical. Illustrating Christian adoption from the lenses of Roman adoption practices. The meaning of the metaphor in the ancient Greco-Roman context is critical in understanding and applying Pauline theology. Through adoption, believers in Christ become sons, thus heirs of God, hence warranting what God owns. This study will examine the meaning and understanding of υἱοθεσία within its Graeco-Roman context. It will help believers appreciate their legitimate right to what God the Father owns. Thus, because of their identity as sons, they do not have to subject themselves to practices meant to please God to bless or answer their prayers. Instead, they have been qualified through Christ. In order to trace the thoughts of the author of Galatians 4:1−7, the researcher will undertake an exegesis of the pericope to examine the original meaning to the first audience. In addition, the researcher uses a socio-rhetorical approach to look into the text. The author’s world, which was influenced by the Greco-Roman culture and laws, differs from that of a modern reader (Kim, 2014). Further, culture changes over time, hence the need for an in-depth study of the respective contexts of Bible texts. The researcher will use secondary historical writings concerning the Greco-Roman era. During the time of the law, the Jews regarded themselves as the only legitimate sons of God. However, this study seeks to find out whether both Jews and Gentile Christians are legitimate heirs of God through Jesus Christ. | |
