Item Open Access African Healing Shrines, Contextualized therapies and Specializations(Regnum Publishers, 2021-01-21) Chiroma, Nathan H.Throughout history, the quest for healing and wholeness outside conventional medicine has been a practice embraced by many. Medical pilgrimages outside of conventional hospitals were common practice in various eras in history. People travelled far and wide in the quest for healing in what is described as holy places such as shrines, prayer houses, monasteries and other locations. In Africa, the practice is not only gaining attention, but it is gaining more popularity, as a momentous social, spiritual and psychological issue. The existence of healing shrines and prayer houses are increasingly becoming popular, and many emerging themes and trends are adding new dimensions to the quest for healing and wholeness. One of the major emerging phenomena is that of specialisation. It is argued that specialisations are rooted either in heritage or calling as in the case of prayer houses. Specialisations are proving to be an important element in the healing sites. Specialisation in this context refers to the concentration on the healing of one or two ailments in a particular healing site. The focus of this chapter is to consider the dynamics of specialisation, especially as it occurs in healing shrines and prayer houses. Whereas healing shrines and prayer houses have been extensively studied in Africa, the aspect of specialisation has not received much attention among scholars. Specialisation as used in this chapter focuses only on one or two illnesses in a given healing shrine or prayer house.Item Open Access African Hermeneutics(ACTS, 2019-01-01) Mburu, ElizabethItem Open Access Agricultural Biotechnology in Sub-Saharan Africa Capacity, Enabling Environment and Applications in Crops, Livestock, Forestry and Aquaculture(Springer, 2022) Rege, J.E.O; Ochieng, Joel W.; Kiambi, Dionysious; Keith, JonesItem Open Access Agricultural Biotechnology in Sub-Saharan Africa Capacity, Enabling Environment and Applications in Crops, Livestock, Forestry and Aquaculture(Springer, 2022) Rege, John Edward Otieno and Sones, KeithSub-Saharan African countries were categorized with regard to their capacity for agricultural biotechnology research and application, including human capacities, institutions and facilities, operational budgets and existence of facilitating networks. For the crop and livestock sectors combined, no countries were categorized as having ‘very high’ capacity; only South Africa was categorized as ‘high’; and three countries, Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria, were categorized as ‘medium’. All other SSA countries were categorized as having ‘low’ or ‘very low’ capacity. Capacity was generally higher for crops than for livestock. For the crop sector, South Africa was categorized as ‘very high’; Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe as ‘high’; and Botswana, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, DRC, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, Eswatini and Zambia as ‘medium’ capacity. For livestock, South Africa was ‘high’ and Kenya and Nigeria ‘medium’. Strong links to international partners, such as hosting a CGIAR centre, tended to be associated with higher capacity.Item Open Access Communication made simple: A handbook for communication skills(Utafiti foundation, 2018) Warfa, A.; Anudo, C.N.; Njoroge, Martin CItem Open Access Creative Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Education(Palgrave Macmillan, 2024) Alex Urmeneta; Margarida RomeroThe chapter commences by presenting the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of education. It aims to provide an overview of the AI environment in education, highlighting the importance of a nuanced comprehension of its effects, ethical implications, and potential to stimulate innovative teaching methods. The chapter explores the historical background of technological interventions in education and takes a critical approach to examining the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI. It also considers the sociocultural and creative aspects of using AI in education. AI has typically focused on imitating human intelligence. Within the realm of human abilities, we recognize various degrees of creative involvement in AI in education, which demonstrates its capacity to revolutionize learning experiences. At the most advanced stages of creative involvement, we explore the possibilities for collaboration between human intelligence and AI, suggesting a viewpoint of human–AI co-creativity. The chapter also outlines the book’s structure, which consists of three main sections: the creative engagement approach, real examples in K-12 education, and advances and prospects in higher education. The different chapters envision not only the acculturation and education of AI, but also the potential of human–AI collaboration to support learners in expressing their unique talents and developing expansive, AI-supported learning initiatives.Item Open Access Discourses on Sustainable Development in Africa(CEDRED, 2020-01) Chiroma, Jane AdhiamboItem Open Access Encyclopaedia of the Bible and its Reception(Walter de Gruyter, 2019-09) Rutere, JoshuaItem Open Access A Fresh Quest for New Language Bearings in Africa(Multilingual matters Ltd, 2004-01) Muthwii, Margaret J.; Kioko, Angelina N.Item Open Access A guide to bible Translation: People, Languages and Topics(United Bible Societies, 2019-02-01) Muthwii, Margaret J.Item Open Access How do we tell them? It is written in honour of Dr. Kees de Blois and his wife Janneke for their many years of dedicated service to the Lord in Africa. In all their life in the Bible translation enterprise they have lived for one thing—to see Scriptures translated into the languages of the peoples of the world. Their success and the success of this enterprise “must not be judged only by the number of languages translated into or by the number of copies of New Testaments and Bibles that have been distributed. For the translator [like Kees], it is the role of the translated Scriptures in the life of the Christian that must be taken as the measure of its impact” (Noss 2004:21). This paper, therefore, explores the impact of the Scriptures in the Christian church birthed in Africa in the 19th, 20th and in the present century.Item Open Access Interpretation in judicial settings(Nsemia inc. K.Item Open Access Learners' acquisition of English vocabulary: Challenges and implications for classroom teaching practice (Kenya)(Teachers of English to speakers of other languages, 2009-09) Njoroge, Martin C.; Ndungu, Ruth W.The Kenyan learner of English acquires his or her vocabulary without overt structured instruction. The learning of vocabulary is a continuous process, through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. The lexicon to be learned, therefore, depends on the learner. What the syllabus implies is that the Kenyan learner of English is capable of acquiring on his or her own an English vocabulary of the ideal depth and breadth. The argument in this research is that this may not be the case. The research therefore seeks to investigate what English lexical items the Kenyan learner acquired against such a pedagogic background with the aim of arguing for different lexical pedagogy. This research observes that learners display difficulties in the acquisition and use of vocabu-lary. The research mainly places focus on the use of synonym interchangeability and synonym substitution.Item Open Access Multilingualism and Education in Africa: The state of the state of the art(Cambridge Scholars publishing, 2014) Orwenjo, Daniel O.; Njoroge, Martin C; Ndungu, Ruth W.; Mwangi, Phyllis W.Item Open Access Nature Based Enterprises for Sustainable Development(African Biodiversity Conservation and Innovations Centre, 2014-06-01) Obel-Lawson, E.; Kiambi, D. K.Natural resources play a significant role in the livelihoods of rural households. They are part of the complex and diverse rural livelihoods. They provide subsistence and cash income to local communities. The natural resource base provides most food, fuel, fodder, building materials, traditional medicines, materials for cloth and dyes, gums and resins and fibre. Population pressure, mis management of natural resources and poor farming methods have contributed to the destruction of agricultural and grazing lands, leading to a decline in food production, conflict over natural resources and increased urban migration in search of employment. These factors in addition to inappropriate social and economic policies, traditional, cultural and historic factors have resulted in increasing environmental degradation and the poverty facing most of Africa's population today.Item Open Access A New kind of Development in Africa(CEDRED, 2019-01-01) Chiroma, Jane AdhiamboItem Open Access Our teacher doesn't speak like theirs: Analysis of variations in the spoken English of teachers in Multilingual settings in Kenya(Cambridge scholars publishing, 2014-09-01) Njoroge, Martin C.; Ndungu, R.W.; Gathigia, Moses G.English language is not only one of the official languages in Kenya but also a medium of instruction in Kenyan schools. The assumption is that at all school levels, the teachers, who are also the main linguistic models to the learners are excellent in their command of the language. There is need to investigate the reality of the English classroom in Kenya since this assumption may not necessarily be a representation of the actual reality. This chapter seeks to investigate the variations and reports its findings that indeed the spoken language used by these teachers varies significantly even from the norm of correctness as is based on the British Standard. This mainly is because of two aspects, one being that there are other international languages spoken in Kenya and secondly, the fact that the ethnicity variable impacts on the spoken English used by the teachers within their classroomsItem Open Access Overview of human trafficking and its implication on Africa’s development.(CEDRED, 2019) Kinuthia, Cyndi; Komen, L; Mbogoh, B
